Schedule of Events

Saturday, September 18, 2010: Writers Workshop with Bonnie Dodge. Get started on your own journey story for inclusionin the exhibit. 10:00 a.m. noon in the library community room. Bring stories (and a photo if you have one) to the library bythe end of October, whether or not you can come to the workshop.

Series of book-related presentations. Books available for check-out (no library card required) from the library. Read thebook before or after the presentation, or just come enjoy the presentation. All presentations are at 1:00 p.m. at the library.

Saturday, October 16: Sacagawea of the Lewis and Clark Expedition by Ella E. Clark and Margot Edwards; presenter Louise Ackley, community room

Saturday, November 6: Idahos Poetry: A Centennial Anthology; presenter Ron McFarland,

inside the library.

Saturday, November 20: The Essential Lewis and Clark, ed. Landon Y. Jones; presenter Russ Tremayne, community room.

December 11 through January 22, 2011: The Smithsonian is coming!

Journey Stories exhibit on display in the library during regular hours (extended hours 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, closed for holidays) along with a local history exhibit and other exhibits from our community. A docent will be available from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. daily, or by prior arrangement. Plus, lots of special activities and guest speakers, all

at the library!

Saturday, December 11: Opening gala 1:00-3:00 p.m. John Bieter will give the keynote presentation, Understanding Western Migration, a history of immigration and migration in America, at 1:00. Musical entertainment, refreshments, and a first chance to check out all the exhibits.

Saturday, December 18: Jerome School District Day Refreshments and activities for kids, 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.Gary Eller will perform and talk about Idaho folksongs at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, January 8: The new year, 2011, is the 200th anniversary of the Hunt Expedition. Jim Gentry will speak about their travels through this area at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, January 15: Bill Rossiter will present Magic Carpet of Steel. Railroad songs and stories, and what the railroad meant to the West and the pioneers.

Saturday, January 22: Ron Hatzenbuehler on Idaho Migration and Settlement. Where we came from, how and why we came.

New Spanish Books in the Spanish Library

The Colectivo de Jerome donated $3,000 to the Jerome Public Library for new Spanish books, media and Rosetta Stone software.

New books are available now for checkout and Rosetta Stone software for English and Spanish speakers will be made available in the near future.

We want to thank the Colectivo for their generous donation and for supporting the Spanish Library at the Jerome Public Library.

Spring Break Time in Jerome

School is out for the week, what can you do for free and fun in Jerome? Come to the Jerome Public Library. We have a variety of new books, music and movies for those young and old that will occupy your time this week- plus we have plenty of games that can be played in the library!

Wednesday the Teen Youth Advisory Committee will have a St. Patrick's Day party that will include treats, lounge time, Magic card game and art project, join us 3pm Wednesday March 17, 2010 Teen Area. We will also be having the weekly Wii Thursday at 3pm Thursday March 18, 2010 Teen Area.

Each day of the week we will spotlight new technology applications that can be applied in your personal or academic uses!

Family Reading Week

Jerome Public Library celebrates Family Reading Week with Fine Forgiveness and Trail Mix

During the week of Nov 15-21, every library item returned to the Jerome Public Library (JPL) will have its fine forgiven, regardless of amount owed for that item. The staff and board are hoping this incentive will not only get “lost” materials retuned but also reinstate the privileges of those patrons whose accounts have been suspended due to large fines.
To celebrate family reading activities new children’s programmer, Ralyn Nelson has put together a kick-off event to take place at the library on Monday, November 16 at 6:00p.m. The theme for the week is “Idaho is WILD about Reading.” The food, fun, and games will be centered around outdoor recreation and Idaho wildlife with a special presentation given by Idaho Fish and Game featuring Hides and Skulls. Families who attend the kick-off event will be given a reading passport to be completed throughout the week. An outdoor recreation gift basket will be raffled on Friday, November 20th. All participating families who return their passports by 3:00p.m on Friday will be eligible for the raffle.
Come celebrate the sharing of books and stories as a family and take advantage of all that your library has to offer by returning overdue materials during this special week. Today is Election Day, please remember to vote. For residents living north of Main Street, the polling place is at the Jerome Public Library. For residents living south of Main Street, the polling place is the City Council Chambers. Polls will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. All residents age 18 and older are allowed to vote. Same day registration at the polls is available.

Jerome Loves Books on the Go
The patrons have spoken and your library board has listened. Over the past year, the Idaho Commission for Libraries funded a free audio book subscription making books in this format available to all Idaho public library card holders. When the program was rolled out in Jerome in the fall of 2008, many book lovers asked Santa for an MP3 device to checkout books in this format. During 2009, Apple allowed their devices to be used for audio book downloads and the number of users grew even more.

When cuts had to be made at the state level, one of the programs on the chopping block was the audio book subscription for FY2010. This left the decision to our library board to determine if our patrons use warranted funding for this format of book at the local level. The numbers spoke for themselves...over the course of one year, approx. 3,000 audio books had been downloaded by JPL card holders. With this kind of usage and due to the fact that audio books are gaining in popularity and accessibility, the board voted to continue the subscription and make audio books available on our online catalog.

Every Child Ready to Read

Every Child Ready to Read began Oct 14, 2009 and will continue for 6 weeks through the fall at Jerome Public Library. Susan Reid a Elementary Reading teacher walks through 6 basic priciples of early childhood literacy. This course provides building blocks for parents to begin teaching reading at birth. Feel free to call and see if there is space avaliable for you and your children.
